The problem most patrons can’t name

Walk out of certain screenings and you might feel like your eyes worked harder than usual — without being able to say exactly why. On many high-gain and silver projection screens, especially under laser projection or during long-format and 3D content, a grainy interference pattern called speckle is often the culprit.

Speckle occurs when coherent light — the kind produced by laser projectors — scatters off a screen’s microscopic surface texture and interferes with itself, creating a shimmering, granular artifact across the image. It’s subtle enough that most audiences never learn the term, but persistent enough that it contributes to visual fatigue over a two-or-three-hour runtime.

Why speckle matters more than it used to

Speckle isn’t new, but its relevance to exhibitors has grown sharply alongside the industry-wide shift to laser projection. Laser light sources are more coherent than the xenon lamps they’re replacing, which means speckle that was barely perceptible under older projection technology becomes far more visible under laser — right as more multiplexes are upgrading to it.

At the same time, Premium Large Format auditoriums and extended-runtime content (3D, HFR releases, prestige two-and-a-half-hour-plus films) put more strain on viewing comfort than ever. A screen surface that performs well for a 90-minute matinee can feel noticeably less comfortable across a longer, more visually intense format.
