OVERVIEW
Melody Theatre has been a well-known entertainment destination in Vizag for many years. With a strong reputation and loyal audience base, the theatre decided to upgrade its infrastructure to meet the growing expectations of modern viewers. In this process, it became the first cinema in India to install the Barco HDR projector, setting a new standard for picture quality in single-screen theatres.
HDR PROJECTION AND IT’S IMPACT ON THE CINEMA INDUSTRY
HDR PROJECTION AND IT’S IMPACT ON THE CINEMA INDUSTRY
HDR projection is redefining cinema by delivering visuals that standard systems cannot match. With deeper contrast, brighter highlights, and a wider color range, it brings films closer to real life and ensures audiences see movies exactly as filmmakers intended. Every detail in shadows and highlights is preserved, enhancing clarity, color fidelity, and realism. For theatres, HDR is more than a display upgrade—it’s a strategic investment that enables premium ticketing, boosts satisfaction, increases occupancy, and future-proofs auditoriums as studios adopt HDR mastering. By offering a viewing experience impossible to replicate at home, HDR elevates both the artistic and commercial value of cinema.
The Barco LS4K HDR projector delivers this promise through advanced technology. It achieves up to six times higher peak luminance than standard systems, with profound blacks, enhanced contrast, and precise laser control for balanced, natural images. Consistency is maintained from mastering to screen, ensuring films appear exactly as intended. Together, these features allow theatres to deliver HDR content with maximum fidelity, giving audiences richer, more immersive visuals that reflect the filmmaker’s true vision.
After evaluating multiple screens, Melody Theatre selected the Galalite Mirage 2.7 as the screen most capable of unlocking the full potential of HDR projection. Its defining strength lies in Lensray Technology, which delivers centre-to-edge brightness uniformity, eliminating hotspots and ensuring that every seat in the auditorium receives the same visual clarity. This uniformity is especially critical for HDR, where elevated brightness and deeper contrast demand absolute consistency across the viewing surface.
The Mirage 2.7’s high-gain silver coating enhances light reflection for both 2D and 3D HDR content, allowing the Barco LS4K HDR projector’s luminance and contrast to be displayed with precision. By combining uniform brightness, accurate color reproduction, and reliable performance, the screen creates a platform where HDR visuals can reach their true potential.
CHALLENGE
CHALLENGE
CHALLENGE
While the projector brought revolutionary potential, it also presented a new challenge: Melody Theatre needed a screen that could fully support HDR’s advanced capabilities. The screen had to handle high brightness without hotspots, reproduce colours with accuracy and uniformity, maintain sharpness across a wide viewing area, and remain durable and cost-effective over the long term. The goal was straightforward yet demanding to elevate the visual experience for audiences while strengthening the theatre’s standing as a preferred destination for premium cinema in the region.
SOLUTION
The chosen solution was Galalite’s Mirage 2.7, customized to a size of 60 x 26 ft to match the auditorium’s layout and projector setup. By tailoring the screen’s specifications to the theatre’s requirements, Galalite ensured that Melody Theatre could fully harness the HDR projector’s capabilities and deliver a consistent, premium viewing experience.
IMPLEMENTATION
The installation was carried out in collaboration with Prime Pix (Kamalakannan) and completed within 7–10 days, including shipping. Galalite supported the project end-to-end—offering technical consultation during screen selection, guiding the installation process, and continuing to provide after-sales support. The rollout was seamless, on schedule, and aligned perfectly with Melody Theatre’s launch timeline.
IMPACT
Following the upgrade, Melody Theatre saw a noticeable transformation in its cinema experience. Audiences enjoyed sharper, brighter visuals with improved contrast and shadow detail, uniform picture quality across the auditorium, and more natural color reproduction. The theatre also benefited from reduced operational and maintenance costs, further strengthening the long-term value of the investment. Viewers responded with enthusiasm, with many recognizing the superior quality of the experience from the very first show.
